About the event

Every Wednesday, Tairāwhiti school kids will be meeting the challenge to choose a an alternative, more environmentally mode of transport to school. Students in participating schools are encouraged, where they can, to bike, walk, run, catch a bus, skateboard or carpool.

Schools log their students journeys each Wednesday and earn points for their school which increases their change to share in a prize pool of funding for the winning schools to spend on resources of their choice.

By participating in the challenge, students are helping reduce carbon emissions, reduce road congestion, improve the safety of our streets and increase the health and wellbeing of our communities.

The Tairāwhiti Wednesday Challenge has been launched by the Tairāwhiti Environment Centre and funded by Waka Kotahi's Hoe ki angitū - Innovation Fund.
