About the event

Ecosourcing for resilience in a changing climate

Presented by Peter Heenan, Senior Researcher, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research

Using locally-sourced plants  - ecosourcing - for ecological restoration has been practiced widely in New Zealand for over 50 years.  Is this practice restricting or even endangering our restoration outcomes?

A recent paper considers ecosourcing in the light of conservation objectives and a changing climate.  The authors review biogeographic regions defined by shared distributions of multiple species, phylogeographic studies of individual species, inbreeding depression, and pre-human vegetation and advocate these data favour considerably enlarging seed collection zones. Nine seed collecting zones are recommended for New Zealand and guidance on implementing these is provided.

Peter Heenan will present the science of the pros and cons of the proposal for enlarged seed collection zones for ecosourcing in New Zealand.

Date: Tuesday 12 September

Time: 11:30am – 12:00pm
